One Thing

This has been a very busy week, which will make this blog post even more applicable.  However, I got the idea of this blog post last week, and I just haven't had the time to type it up.  My class for tonight got canceled, so that gave me a chance to rest a bit and type a few of my blog ideas.

If you are anywhere near my generation's age, you probably know this exchange from a movie...

Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is?

Mitch: No, what?

Curly (holding up one finger): This.

Mitch: Your finger?

Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don’t mean shit.

Mitch: That’s great but, what’s the one thing?

Curly: That’s what you gotta figure out.

That was from City Slickers, which was a movie about a group of men that were feeling lost and went on a cattle drive to help re-ignite their life.  Curly is the lead cowboy on the drive, and this was his advice to Mitch, one of the stars.

The point that he was making was that life will get difficult, but, if you have one thing that drives you forward, you can overcome anything that pops up.  It's not going to be the same thing for everyone.  Had I been on a different path with an ex that wasn't an ex but was a loving, loyal support; my one thing might have been that person and my job might have been something else, entirely.  However, I am on this path, and my one thing at present is my desire to make a difference in the life and future of kids.

I applied this concept, today, in fact.  I was tired and drained, because I am having to do a lot of processing and training things for getting ready to teach, while I am ALSO having to work to pay bills prior to getting any pay for the teacher assignment.  It was straining me a little, but I reminded myself that this too will pass.  Or, it will at least change to a new stress.  However, at the end of the day, I will STILL be in a position to make an impact on the kids education and lives.  That helped me to set the stress aside and reboot for tomorrow.

Challenges will come as you progress towards WHATEVER your goal for happiness might be.  However, if you have a purpose for being in the valley, you will make it to the other side.  If you don't... get one.. or the darkness will eat you alive.
