Love is a Verb

A long time ago, there was a very popular Christian song that crossed over to mainstream, and if I say the name most people near my age will know it. The song came from a band that graduated from the same college from which I got my Bachelor's... Liberty University. That...in and of itself.. should cause people to give pause to group judgement, because LU was founded and run by Jerry Falwell.. ultra moral majority member. However, the racially diverse band and Toby Mac (lead singer) would go on to spread love in some of the darkest spots and among those that would never set foot in a church. I hope I have done the same.

Anyway, the song was called Love is a Verb. Here's the link. Some lyrics are:

"Pullin' out my big black book
Cause when I need a word defined that's where I look
So I move to the L's quick, fast, in a hurry
Threw on my specs, thought my vision was blurry
I looked again but to my dismay
It was black and white with no room for grey
Ya see, a big "V" stood beyond my word
And yo that's when it hit me, that luv is a verb
Words come easy but don't mean much
When the words they're sayin' we can't put trust in
We're talkin' 'bout love in a different light
And if we all learn to love it would be just right"

I was thinking about it this morning.  I've repeated this message many times over my years of blogging.  You hear people say (and I've heard ex's say) that they have love, even if they don't show it.  That's not true.  Without actions, you have the IDEA of love.  That's what exists in your head... ideas.  Love is the action fruit of those ideas.  The IDEA of love doesn't do much to feed the poor or make someone feel special and noticed.  It takes works.  That's another verse that I've noted often goes misunderstood.  A verse says, "Faith without works is dead."  Many take that to say that it's about salvation and if you are not living a holy life you are not saved.  That's not...and wouldn't be.. what the author meant.  It meant the same thing that Jesus taught on earth.  It's not the seeds but where the seeds fall and whether they are received and acted upon.  If you really want and believe in something, you will be acting to bring it about, even as you ask God for aid.  The same is true for love.  If you love someone, they would be able to see some action to let them know.

So, don't keep your love a secret and just assume that they can read your mind or heart to know it is there.  If you love someone, make sure they know it by way of your actions.  Without that, you are just passive aggressively waiting for someone to blame.  That blame... falls on the one that kept it inside.
