I intended to begin pulling together all of my Dark Chronicles posts into a book with quotes this weekend, but I got this post idea and realized that I have not completed the concepts that will go into it, yet. So, I will continue, until I feel that it is ready.
Today, I was watching the 2nd episode of the 4th season of The Witcher, and I liked something that someone said and wish to expand on it. In the episode, one of the characters said that people always feel the need to create someone more evil than they are to feel good by comparison. That is indeed a good concept that is applicable to our day, especially as people find people of other political parties, sexual orientations, genders, races, nationalities, religious opinions and more to declare as EVIL and try to find purpose in destroying those less evil than themselves, while ignoring their own acts that they do in failing others or failing themselves or simply not having the hapiness that they desire.
Indeed, we have entire religions that are born out of fighting the "evil" in the world and the "devil" that controls it. And, in so fighting, they enact all kinds of destruction and evil in their wake. And, thus, you have war after war after war, for thousands of years... each fought by sides that proclaim themselves as good by comparison to the evil in others that they must defeat, rather than addressing their own demons or taking responsibility for their own lives. Of course, in so looking at the acts of others, they only look at the bad, while looking at themselves they only see the good. How would the world be if the standards were reversed for even a day? Ted Lasso has a quote by the lead character in a few episodes, once in a very notable and important part at the end of the last season, where Ted says, "I hope that either all of us or none of us are judged by the actions of our weakest moments… but rather by the strength we show when, and if we’re ever given a second chance." Indeed.
Because, we CAN rise up, if we choose to take responsibility for our lives and do good in the world, without having to rely upon the creation of a GOOD figure creation to redeem us (we don't just create a devil but seek to create good either in a Divine figure that .. of course.. cannot be flawed or in the seeing of good in others that even they may not profess). The truth is that none of us are good, even on our best days, and none of us are bad on our worst. We are all just people with flaws and do good and bad things, which I think even Jesus was trying to convey in not stoning the woman.. even if those by his name spend so much of their lives trying to fulfill a mission of labeling people good and evil as their purpose.
You are not good or evil. You are human, and I think life would be much better if we stopped our focus on the choices or flaws of others but looking at their NEEDS and what we can do, instead. At least, that is my hope as we enter the months of Thanksgiving and Christmas or whatever your faith choice happens to be to come.
